D’Arrieros Coffee Farm
Colombia and coffee go hand-in-hand, so for our third day we ventured 45 minutes outside Medellín to D’Arrieros Coffee Farm in San Sebastián de Palmitas. This family-run farm offered a deep dive into the origins of coffee and how it is traditionally prepared. We began with an explanation of the farm’s history and the journey of coffee through the centuries.
We were dressed in traditional hats, aprons, scarves, and ponchos. Buttercup was chosen as the model to demonstrate each item’s use on the farm! We learned that some farms wash the mucilage from the cherry and use it to make a sweet iced drink. The girls and I were not fans of the taste, but it was fascinating to try.
We had a short picking session, gathering ripe cherries before processing them in a hand-cranked machine that separated the skin from the bean. Afterward, we spent time roasting and tasting the coffee.
Combined Lunch and Coffee Tours in Colombia
One of the best parts of many coffee tours in Colombia is the chance to enjoy a freshly prepared local lunch right at the farm. After spending the morning learning about the life cycle of coffee, nothing is better than sitting down to a hearty meal made with regional ingredients. At D’Arrieros Coffee Farm, lunch was one of our highlights. The flavors were rich and comforting, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. We loved that the ingredients came directly from the surrounding area, making the meal as authentic as the coffee itself. This is also a wonderful time to relax and connect with your hosts, ask more questions, and soak in the scenery.
Combined Horseback and Coffee Tours in Colombia
Some coffee farms, like D’Arrieros, offer the option to combine your coffee tour with a horseback ride. After learning about coffee, you can saddle up and explore the rolling hills in a completely different way.
We were matched with horses and mules, each perfectly calm and sure-footed. Our ride took us up steep stone trails and along quiet rural roads. The horses never hesitated, except to grab a quick mouthful of grass when we were not watching! The girls loved every second and named the ride as one of their favorite memories of the trip.
The scenery was breathtaking, with sweeping views of the countryside and glimpses of local farms. Riding through this landscape gave us a deeper appreciation of the hard work it takes to grow coffee here. It was an unforgettable way to end the day before heading back to Medellín.
The Family Verdict
The tour gave us a real appreciation for the effort behind every cup of Colombian coffee. We absolutely loved the horseback ride, and lunch was delicious! The hands-on moments like picking cherries, cranking the processing machine, and tasting the coffee were great. Overall, we came away with great memories, some beautiful photos, and a deeper respect for the farmers who keep this tradition alive. It is an experience worth having, even if you tailor it to your family’s pace!
