La Fortuna stole our hearts from the moment we arrived! This charming town nestled at the base of the iconic Arenal Volcano immediately captured our sense of adventure. We had come to experience the pure magic of Costa Rica, and La Fortuna delivered in spades. Warm mineral water rising from the earth, lush rainforests teeming with wildlife, and thrilling activities at every turn made this the perfect beginning to our family adventure. Buttercup and Spider Monkey were wide-eyed with excitement, ready to zip-line through the canopy, raft down rushing rivers, and encounter creatures we had only seen in documentaries. Whether you are seeking heart-pounding adventure or peaceful moments soaking in natural hot springs, La Fortuna offers something magical for every family member. This guide shares our favorite discoveries, practical tips, and the unforgettable moments that made our time in La Fortuna truly special.
What is La Fortuna
La Fortuna is a small town in northern Costa Rica positioned at the base of Arenal Volcano. Once a quiet farming community, it has transformed into Costa Rica’s adventure capital. The town is relatively small and walkable, with a growing number of restaurants, accommodations, and shops catering to tourists while maintaining genuine Costa Rican character. Arenal Volcano dominates the landscape, visible from almost every vantage point on clear days.

The volcano remained dormant for centuries before erupting spectacularly in 1968, an event that put the region on the map for tourism and adventure. The geothermal activity beneath the region creates the natural hot springs that make La Fortuna special. These mineral-rich waters are connected to the volcano’s power, providing evidence of Earth’s incredible geological forces at work beneath our feet. Understanding this geological context deepens appreciation for everything you experience in La Fortuna.
Getting to La Fortuna
Getting to La Fortuna from San Jose International Airport takes approximately four to five hours of driving. We arranged our transfer through Private Transfers CR, a reliable service that provided a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle and knowledgeable driver. The journey itself is scenic, traveling through changing landscapes and watching vegetation transform as you descend toward La Fortuna. The drivers are experienced and familiar with the winding mountain roads.
During our transfer, we stopped at a local soda for refreshments. A toucan flew in and landed on a chair right near where Buttercup and Spider Monkey were sitting. The bird seemed completely unbothered by our presence, posing for countless photos as the girls whispered excitedly. For our girls, this was the moment Costa Rica became real, not a zoo or sanctuary, but a wild bird choosing to share a moment with us in its natural habitat. This unforgettable first encounter set the tone for the wonder we would experience throughout La Fortuna.

Best La Fortuna Activities #1: Natural Hot Springs
There is something absolutely magical about sinking into warm mineral water while surrounded by lush rainforest. The hot springs of La Fortuna are heated naturally by Arenal Volcano, creating the perfect temperature for relaxation. Our hotel, Volcano Lodge, had its own hot springs right on the property, which meant we could enjoy the mineral-rich waters whenever we wanted. The girls loved splashing around after a day of adventure, and honestly, so did we.

The warm water eased our muscles and created peaceful moments amidst all the excitement. There are numerous hot spring resorts and naturally occurring pools scattered throughout the area, ranging from upscale resort-style to rustic and intimate. There is something special about floating in warm water under the stars, listening to the nighttime chorus of the rainforest. It became our favorite way to wind down each evening.

Best La Fortuna Activities #2: White Water Rafting on the Arenal River
White water rafting on the Arenal River is one of the most thrilling and popular activities in La Fortuna. We booked through Pure Trek, a highly reputable local company known for their skilled guides and commitment to safety. The Arenal River offered a perfect combination of exciting rapids and stunning natural scenery. Buttercup and Spider Monkey were nervous but excited as we donned our helmets and life jackets. Our guide was patient with the girls, making sure they felt confident while pushing our family just the right amount to make the experience thrilling.

The rapids alternated between sections of calm water where we could absorb the rainforest scenery and sections of churning white water that made our hearts race. The guide explained the different rapids and helped us navigate the technique needed to paddle effectively. Paddling as a family unit, with everyone working together, created a genuine sense of accomplishment as we conquered each rapid. The combination of adrenaline, natural beauty, and family teamwork made this one of our favorite days of the entire trip. Many tour operators offer varying difficulty levels, so families can choose experiences suited to their comfort and experience level.

Best La Fortuna Activities #3: Zip-lining Through the Canopy
Zip-lining through the Costa Rican rainforest is an experience that defies description. We suspended ourselves from wires stretched high above the forest floor, zooming from one platform to the next, with nothing but the canopy below us. The combination of fear and exhilaration was intoxicating. Both girls were nervous at first, but our guides were fantastic, walking them through every step with patience and encouragement.

The most thrilling moment was the Tarzan Swing, an exhilarating experience where you leap off a platform and swing out into the canopy on a rope, soaring through the air before landing on a lower platform. Buttercup approached it more methodically, but once she realized she was safe and having fun, she embraced the adventure fully. The perspective of seeing the rainforest from above and feeling the rush of wind is something we will never forget. Multiple zip-line tour companies operate in La Fortuna, offering various course lengths and difficulty levels to accommodate different ages and comfort levels.

Best La Fortuna Activities #4: Waterfall Rappelling and Canyoning
We chose Pure Trek for our canyoning adventure, and it turned out to be one of the most thrilling experiences of our entire trip. This was not casual canyon hiking. We were actually rappelling down waterfalls, descending on ropes from one waterfall to the next, getting progressively more wet, muddy, and exhilarated as we went deeper into the canyon. The guide set up secure anchors at each waterfall, provided harnesses and helmets, and talked us through the technique for rappelling safely. Each waterfall presented a different challenge and a different height. By the time we reached the final rappel, both girls had found their confidence and were ready for the adventure.

The highlight was the Monkey Drop, a 60-foot free fall into a jungle pool. This was completely optional, and we waited to see if the girls wanted to do it. Spider Monkey was first, launching herself off the cliff with absolute joy and a shriek that probably echoed through the canyon. Buttercup went next, conquering her own fear with determination. Watching them discover their own courage in that moment was worth every penny we spent on the trip. Between rappels, we swam in crystal-clear pools fed by the waterfalls, explored the lush canyon floor, and took in the sheer beauty of being deep in the rainforest surrounded by waterfalls. Waterfall rappelling requires a reasonable level of fitness and genuine comfort with heights, but it is a memory your family will treasure forever.
Best La Fortuna Activities #5: Hanging Bridges
For a more leisurely way to explore the rainforest canopy, the hanging bridges at Mistico Park offer a gentler but equally mesmerizing experience. Walking across suspended bridges strung between massive trees gives you the sensation of floating through the forest canopy. Unlike zip-lining, the bridges offer a contemplative way to experience the rainforest. You move at your own pace, pausing to spot wildlife, listen to bird calls, and simply breathe in the forest air.

Spider Monkey was fascinated by the engineering of the bridges, constantly asking how they were built. Buttercup enjoyed the slower pace, taking time to spot birds and admiring the incredible diversity of plant life. The three-kilometer trail winds through six hundred acres of private land. Morning walks offer the best chance of spotting wildlife. Bring sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water, and a charged camera.
Best La Fortuna Activities #6: Wildlife and Sloth Tours
One of the greatest joys of La Fortuna is the incredible abundance of wildlife and frequency of encounters. Throughout our three days, we spotted an amazing variety of animals in their natural habitat. Iguanas basked on branches with prehistoric appearance, their spiky crests and scaled bodies looking like tiny dinosaurs. Coatis were one of our favorite discoveries, these curious, ring-tailed creatures scurried along the forest floor in small groups, seemingly unbothered by our presence.

Howler monkeys created a soundtrack to our adventures with their iconic calls echoing through the rainforest. A dedicated sloth tour revealed these gentle, slow-moving creatures hanging from branches in the rainforest canopy. Guides can often locate them for close observation and photography. Watching a sloth’s deliberate movements created genuine connection with nature. The girls loved learning about their incredibly slow metabolism and their role in the ecosystem.

Best La Fortuna Activities #7: Night Walks in the Rainforest
One of our most magical experiences in La Fortuna was a guided night walk through the rainforest. The forest transforms completely after dark, revealing a completely different ecosystem than daytime activities. Our guide led us slowly through the forest with a special red headlamp that does not startle nocturnal animals. As our eyes adjusted to the darkness, the forest became mysterious and alive with unseen creatures.

We spotted tree frogs, spiders, insects that seemed to glow, and heard the calls of nocturnal animals. The night walk created a sense of adventure and slight nervousness, every sound takes on new meaning, and the familiar rainforest becomes a different world entirely. Spider Monkey whispered in awe at the discoveries, while Buttercup moved cautiously but curiously through the darkness. A night walk is not for everyone, but for families comfortable with adventure and mild fear mixed with excitement, it is an unforgettable experience.
Best La Fortuna Activities #8: Exploring the Town
We spent an afternoon exploring La Fortuna town, arranging taxi service through our hotel to get around. We discovered local shops, markets, and restaurants, enjoying authentic Costa Rican meals at small sodas. The Central Park area is where locals and tourists mingle, and we found genuine cultural experiences along with practical necessities like grocery stores and pharmacies.

Between the town center and our hotel, we stopped at Souvenir La Pradera, a huge, well-stocked store where we grabbed snacks, fresh fruit, and supplies. This stop was practical but also fun, as we discovered Costa Rican products the girls had never seen before. Shop owners and restaurant staff throughout town were genuinely friendly, proud of their community and eager to share recommendations. Spending a few hours exploring on your own provides cultural context and often leads to the best local discoveries.
Other La Fortuna Activities
Horseback Riding to La Fortuna Waterfall
Beyond the main activities we enjoyed, La Fortuna offers numerous other options for families looking to customize their experience. Horseback riding tours take you through forests and fields with stunning volcano views. The popular La Fortuna Waterfall horseback tour combines riding with visiting the reserve and learning about indigenous culture. The journey on horseback moves you through authentic Costa Rican landscapes at a slower pace, allowing for wildlife observation and appreciation of the surroundings. Families with different comfort levels can find tours suited to their experience, from beginner-friendly to advanced riders.
Chocolate and Coffee Tours
For families interested in learning about local agriculture and products, chocolate and coffee tours are available throughout the region. The Don Olivo Chocolate Tour teaches how cacao goes from bean to finished chocolate, offering hands-on learning and tasting experiences that children genuinely enjoy. These tours provide educational experiences combined with practical knowledge about how local farmers produce the products you enjoy. Many tours include opportunities to taste samples and purchase direct from local producers, supporting the community while bringing home authentic souvenirs.
Lake Arenal Water Activities
Lake Arenal offers water-based activities including kayaking with stunning views and opportunities for island hopping and wildlife observation. Sunset boat tours provide a peaceful way to experience the lake and volcano views from the water. These activities offer a different perspective on the region and a welcome change of pace from rainforest adventures. The calm waters of the lake are perfect for families looking for a more relaxed experience while still enjoying the natural beauty of the Arenal region. Many tour operators can accommodate various skill levels and preferences, from gentle paddling to more active kayaking adventures.
Arenal Volcano National Park
For those interested in a more geological experience, Arenal Volcano National Park offers hiking through lava fields, exploring archaeological sites, and getting closer volcano views. Several well-maintained trails range from easy walks to strenuous hikes. A private guide significantly enhances the experience by providing context about the 1968 eruption and geological processes. However, volcano visiting is entirely optional. Clear days are required for good visibility, and the volcano can be obscured by clouds for extended periods. We recommend checking weather forecasts and asking your hotel about current conditions before committing to this activity. The hot springs, zip-lining, rafting, and other La Fortuna activities provide complete satisfaction without it.

The Family Verdict
Whether you choose to zip-line through the canopy, raft down rushing rivers, soak in natural hot springs, explore the town, walk through the night forest, or observe wildlife in their natural habitat, La Fortuna delivers adventure in abundance. We left this magical place with tired bodies, happy hearts, and already planning our return visit.
